Gulf Coast oil spill thwarted by local hair
Yardley’s headstrong salon has joined Gulf Coast hair salons in their efforts to clean up the oil from the April 20^th oil rig explosion. Every person in our community has the ability to help contain the oil’s damage by simply getting a haircut. Hair is formed into mats or stuffed into nylon pantyhose legs. The hair can soak up the oil while releasing the clear water. The mats can each be used up to 100 times, soaking up approximately 1 quart of oil per pound of hair with each dip. The mass is later reduced by thousands of worms, resulting in a rich worm-castings fertilizer. At last count, generous hair salons and pet groomers have provided over 450,000 pounds of hair and fur, now on its way to the Gulf. Matter of Trust is staging supplies of booms all along the Gulf in order to be ready wherever the spill hits.
